Rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) is a true South African specialty: rich in natural antioxidants, it also contains minerals (e.g. calcium, magnesium, potassium) and has a pleasantly mild, sweetish taste.

Since it is caffeine-free, it's refreshing in the morning, thirst-quenching during the day and pleasantly calming in the evening – it can be enjoyed at any time, even by children, pregnant women or people sensitive to caffeine.

Its antioxidants support the protection of cells against free radicals. Due to its low tannin content, it is gentle on the stomach and not acidifying.

Active compounds

• Polyphenols and flavonoids – mainly aspalathin, nothofagin, rutin, quercetin – with outstanding antioxidant effects (aspalathin is a unique antioxidant characteristic of rooibos)

External use (traditional)

In folk medicine, a lukewarm rooibos infusion has traditionally also been used as a skin-soothing wash or compress (e.g. for redness or mild irritation). In South Africa it has traditionally been used as a baby bath to soothe irritated baby skin. As a hair rinse, tradition credits it with adding shine and softness.

Directions for use:

Preparing the tea

• Pour 250 ml of boiling water over 1 teaspoon (approx. 2–2.5 g) of rooibos tea.
• Cover and let it steep for 5–10 minutes. (Since it contains no caffeine and little tannin, it can be steeped even longer – this only makes its taste more intense, not bitter.)
• Strain, and drink it plain or flavored (with lemon, honey or milk), hot or chilled.

Can be consumed in any amount, at any time of day, even by those sensitive to caffeine, children, pregnant women and the elderly.

External application (traditional)
